lifting an image

I am a painter. I am thinking about doing large canvases called , the cookbook series. I have many old recipe books. My idea is to lift some of the old pages and their illustrations and to collage them onto my canvases. then to paint still lifes on top. My dilema is, I can't remember what the process is to lift the page images. I did it once at a printmaking course, but can't seem to remember the actual materials needed. It was simple, but delicate work.
Any suggestions?
