November, digital collage by Barbara Rossman.
Illustration for the month of November - Collaborative calendar project hosted by Sandee Hyde on the Bmuse Yahoo group.
Before I finalize every News EZine I spend some time going thru the recent uploads on the Bmuse Yahoo Group. Since the website tends to keep me pretty busy I often miss the wonderful art that is uploaded nearly every day. It is like finding hidden treasures. Barbara Rossman's November is definitely one of those treasures. All that makes Autumn a magic time of year can be found in her collage.

and a quick update on the "Boys"
Bacchus & Hermes, formally known as Fuzz & Wolffie have a permanent home!
Leslie who owns Alpha Stamps website is now their Mom. There will never be shortage of ephemera toys for these little guys:)!!
For those who received the June, Summer NewsEZine I wanted you to know my kitten rescue story had a wonderful happy ending. For those who are new subscribers or missed the last issue, in early June I took in two 4 week old feral kittens, it took a couple months to get them healthy, cuddly and find them the perfect cat mom. As you can see in this photo taken by Leslie domestic life seems to suit them just fine.

Mexican Mission Ornaments
and the story of 5 artists on an "Altered Mission".
Mission ornaments are a popular form of Mexican Folk Art. Generally made from painted tin and featuring a saint or family member they are used as small wall hangings. Although they may differ in materials, size etc., their shape and proportions are done to imitate the old Mission Churches. These ornaments are found in nearly every Mexican home especially during the Christmas Holidays and during the Day of the Dead Festival.
On my vacation this year to northern Baja this summer I became fascinated with these small art pieces and amazed at the variety of themes and materials used. So, I came up with my own version for paper artists. Early in September this year I worked out a 3-D style template for a small Mission Ornament that could be constructed from chipboard or heavy water color stock. And, the door opening on the front of the ornament measures, you guessed it, 2.5 x 3.5 inches just in case anyone would like to create a fabulous frame for a favorite Artist Trading Card. I chose several artists who I knew were comfortable with creating 3-D type paper crafts and sent them the PDF file shown below. Yes, this is the part about five artist on an "Altered Mission." There were no rules and the instructions were simply to use this template to create whatever occurred to them. And the results were AMAZING!!

This is a small image of the template that all the artists were given as a staring point. This is to give you a reference point when you are admiring their wonderful Mission Ornaments and... if you would like to try your own "Altered Mission" simply click on the image above to download the full size 8.5 x 11inch template file in PDF format.
OK now it is time for the eye candy. Enjoy!

And lastly my altered shrine which proves I can't follow even my own instructions! Rather than having doors that opened I secured mine inward to create a shadow box effect. the doors on the art paper that covered the front became the sides of the box and the heavier doors of art paper glued to watercolor stock are folded all the way back and secured with brads to the back of the shrine with brads as shown in the side view. |

The Bmuse Website has lots of how-to projects check out the Projects
and Techniques Directory page.

Great Reads and Inspiration!
Would you like to explore altered art with a south of the border flare? I highly recommend Crafty Chica's Art de la Soul by Kathy Cano Murillo (2006). The author's zest for life and creativity burst from every page. Dozens of fun projects with complete instructions plus a handbook for becoming a "Crafty Chica."
And, there is more her two previous books: Making Shadow Boxes and Shrines (2002) and La Casa Loca (2003) are great as well. Making Shadow Boxes and Shrines features 32 projects from a number of different artists. La Casa Loca is flled with fun funky home decor projects.
Enjoy and make fun, wonderful, bright and colorful things!

Fabrik-Paper Collage Sheets...a Bmuse Exclusive
and what is that??
Fabrik-Paper Collage Sheets are nearly tear proof, with the texture and pliability of linen, lightweight, slightly translucent, the soft natural white of this media gives the images the softer, printed on fabric look without losing the detail of the images or the color saturation. Sew it, glue it... perfect for paper and fabric collage, art dolls, mini quilts, and collage on canvas...sorry it is not machine washable but can be gently hand washed without soap and it doesn't ravel!...AND it is half the price of most fabric collage sheets.
